Abstract

This paper proposes an interpretation of the urban landscape that integrates gender mainstreaming and cultural habitat, highlighting how the use and management of public spaces reflect social and cultural differences, with effects on land care and the ability to respond to ecological crises. Applied to sustainable architecture, gender mainstreaming introduces criteria for the design of accessible and inclusive environments. The analysis of case studies in Vienna, Barcelona, Bologna and Milan confirms the need for gender-sensitive environmental policies, in line with a landscape ecology that links environmental quality to the well-being of communities. In this direction, the EQUAL_Gender MEP (Gender Mainstreaming in Environmental Policies – UNIPA) project develops indicators for design oriented towards inclusion and equal opportunities.
