Abstract

It seems obvious, and we can all agree, that things have become increasingly regulated to promote sustainable construction. It’s widely known that one of the most comprehensive frameworks for this is the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (UN’ SDGs), which specifically define an integrated ecology and recognize that the solution to planetary sustainability can only be achieved through a balance between environmental and social factors. And if the Mediterranean is the location for such sustainable construction, the specific climate and culture will define another key parameter [1] [2]. Here, vernacular architecture is the precise expression of the culture of the territory where it is built. However, times are inexorably changing, and today this framework is expanding globally across the planet, in a vast network of knowledge and instant learning, which is accelerating research and technology exponentially. Well, in these lines the Barcelona Door of Europe Project will be presented, when it is no longer enough for “the house to be a machine for living”, and now “the house must be a ‘machine’ to activate sustainability”.
