Introduction

Schinkel’s quote, as well as the painting, underlines the importance of beauty even when innovation and industry participate in the
creative and production process of artwork.
Architecture, engineering, urban planning, design, etc., at the same level of art, are responsible for landscape’s manifestation, when,
indeed, being simultaneously man’s and Nature’s work.
In this issue of the journal, landscape-ecology topic should deal with the two sides of the same coin, built world and spontaneous
world, by setting as primary goals both the protection of the complex and diversified landscape and the integrity and interaction of
its physical, social, and aesthetic characteristics.
The image itself, his 1820 painting (Castle on the River), clearly illustrates a mixed landscape, composed by wholly natural elements,
such as the sunset, the river, the trees, and at the same time, and completely inseparable, the castle’s complex construction
overlooking the river itself. A symbol of beauty, without a doubt, but also of reflection on the perceptions a landscape can inspire in a
painter and its observers.
