Abstract

Compressed earth blocks are sustainable and environmentally friendly building materials. However, these blocks often suffer from mechanical properties that make them difficult to apply. This article focuses on improving the mechanical performance of BTCs by incorporating natural and recycled reinforcing materials, notably sugarcane bagasse ash, wheat straw, date palm fibers, glass waste and fly ash and others. These additional materials are essential for enhancing the energy efficiency of constructions in addition, they considerably improve mechanical properties. The results of this study will contribute to the development of new building standards and recommendations on the effective use of natural and recycled reinforcing materials for compressed earth blocks, which are effective and sustainable alternatives to conventional building materials, and it can also help promote the design of environmentally-friendly buildings in developing countries by showing how passive design techniques, such as the use of local materials like BTC, can be combined with industrial resistive materials that require less energy to improve thermal comfort and reduce the environmental impact of buildings.
