Abstract

The issue of “quality” is crucial in every scope related to the process of protection and conservation of the cultural heritage.
In the professional experience of the architect who deals with the material legacy of the past to ensure it the best opportunity of its transmission to the future generations, the discussion on what “quality” is, and how it can be sought, is ever present, and it is the most true and profound goal of the design thinking.
Each research or design case, moreover each intervention, as well as each “account” of a cultural heritage, makes us face different situations, in which the grounds of “quality”, already experimented, are sometimes confirmed or, more often, contradicted. Indeed, it is a multi-faceted concept, that refers to different scales (the theoretical and general one, as well as the one related to the specific case).
The essay aims at defining the concept of “quality” in its various facets, declining it with respect to some issues, emerged from our experiences, that better highlight its meanings and its complexity.
