Abstract

The paper addresses the issue of safeguarding and enhancing of the historical-architectural and urban heritage with reference to ecclesiastical heritage, whose ‘pervasiveness’ and capillarity throughout Italy – from large cities and historic centres to the suburbs and smaller, rural centres – is a crucial node in territorial protection and development policies, also in terms of rediscovery and enhancement of collective identity and historical memory. A widespread and deep-rooted heritage such as the ecclesiastical one implies, in fact, the peculiarity and, at the same time, the exemplary nature of the choices made, the effects of which may contribute to outline new models of development and management of religious building, whose evolutionary and performative scenarios may be particularly relevant for the protection of territories and future environmental impact.
