Abstract

The integration of vegetation in architecture has been for years a topic of great interest. Although in a fluctuating manner, plant-related technological solutions have recently faced the extension of their application possibilities: green screens to control incident solar radiation, green façades and living walls to reduce building envelope surficial temperatures and green roofs for high-performance buildings are only some of the words currently used to describe the different hybridizations of the green with the built. In this framework, the present contribution aims at investigate the technical implementations coming from the multiple peculiarities of greenery in architecture, analysing the different possibilities available to designers through the investigation of a sample of contemporary buildings, considered significant as examples of sustainable and innovative design. The purpose of such finding is to produce a critical synthesis of vegetal applications in architecture in order to provide a starting point for reflections on their limits and future developments for an effective integration of vegetation at the architectural scale.
