Abstract

The last report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change highlights the need to contain the rise in temperatures by + 1.5 °C to avoid catastrophic consequences and devastating environmental alterations. What would happen if that goal was not achieved? What scenario will we face with extreme climate change due to a rise in the average temperature of over 4 °C? What actions could be implemented? The paper takes inspiration from these questions and investigates the role that green and green technologies can play in order to preserve “survival needs” in a dystopian environmental context. Based on a critical reading of recent research and emblematic case studies, the work highlights the potential and limits of the green, codifying four innovative strategic design approaches, classified into homogeneous clusters, responding to the “survival needs” mentioned by Y. Friedman in his essay on the Architecture of Survival.
